Sent to Mark Hilditch of the Chronicle 4/7/00

The SET-UP "Design and Make" competition was again successfully held at the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars Academy on Tuesday, 4th July. The winner was Melissa Johnson of St Thomas Moore School with her combined drawer unit and an aluminium Dali-style clock. Second was Claire Oliver from the Sandbach Girls County High School with a well-researched convertible dress for small girls.

For the first time there was an award for A-level projects, won by Phillip Ellis of Alsager High School. He produced a very well made and professional standard manoeuvring trolley for caravans.

Monetary awards were donated by Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars, the Crewe and Nantwich Chamber of Commerce, and the organisers, SET-UP. Judging was done by Sue Sayers of the MMU and Alan Socket of Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars.

SET-UP is a local charity formed to offer young people the opportunity to interact with Science, Engineering and Technology, to stimulate and encourage their continuing participation in these subjects in the future.
