SET UP/2000
Background Information
Whether its programming the video or slapping on the sunscreen Science, Engineering and Technology touch every aspect of our lives. The annual National Science Week, co-ordinated by the British Association for the advancement of science, raises the profile of these issues and promotes the publics engagement with Science, Engineering and Technology.
SET UP is a local charity which aims to bring the excitement of these subjects to school children and members of the public in the South Cheshire area during National Science week, which in the year 2000 will run from March 17th to March 26th.
In March 1999, SET UP/99 laid on over 100 presentations to local children, either in their schools or at specially selected venues. Presentations included:
Visits included places such as Daresbury laboratory, the Blue Planet Aquarium and the Salt Museum, to name but a few. Over 3,500 children participated, and their parents had a chance to join in the fun at a family evening.
SET UP/2000 will be our fifth year and we aim to make the week even bigger and better. To that end the committee is looking for new presentations and, of course, new sources of funding. Events are totally free to the children and participating schools, with all costs (which in 1999 came to in the region of £9,000) being met by SET UP.
SET UP offers a great opportunity for anyone involved in Science, Engineering or Technology to promote their subject within the community. Help us to make SET UP/2000 the best year yet.
