Background Information 2007

Everybody needs science!  SET UP Science is a local charity formed in South Cheshire to offer young people the opportunity to interact with Science, Engineering and Technology, and to stimulate and encourage their continuing participation.  SET UP Science is most active during National Science Week. The annual National Science Week, which in 2007 is from March 9th to March 18th, is coordinated by the British Association for the Advancement of Science.  It is to raise the profile of Science, Engineering and Technology.

In March 2006, SET UP Science laid on 117 presentations to over 3,700 local children, either in their schools or at specially selected venues.  Presentations taking place included:

Places such as Delamere Forest, Connahs Quay Power Station, and the Catalyst Museum were visited.  We also gave the general public and children a terrific family science show, featuring fascinating chemistry experiments using common household products.  This was “Fizz, Foam and Flubber” with Lorelly Wilson and was held at the Danebank Theatre at South Cheshire College

Usually we organize a SET UP Science "Design and Make" Schools Competition but in 2006 this was not held because of difficulties in obtaining a suitable location. The competition offers pupils the chance to gain recognition for their projects, and to receive feedback from expert judges.

Next year, 2007, will be our twelfth science week event and as always we strive to make the week ever better.  To achieve this, the committee is looking for new presentations and, of course, new sources of funding.  Events are totally free to the children and participating schools.  All costs (which in 2006 were about £10,000) are met by SET UP Science.

SET UP Science offers a great opportunity for all involved in Science, Engineering or Technology to promote their subject within the community.  Help us to make 2007 the best year yet.
