Background
Information 2006
Everybody
needs science! The annual National
Science Week, coordinated by the British Association for the Advancement of
Science, raises the profile of Science, Engineering and Technology.
SET UP Science is a local
charity formed in South Cheshire to offer young people the opportunity to
interact with Science, Engineering and Technology, and to stimulate and
encourage their continuing participation.
SET UP Science is
most active during National Science week, which in 2006 is from March 10th
to March 19th.
In
March 2005, SET UP
Science laid on 113 presentations to over 3,600 local children,
either in their schools or at specially selected venues. Presentations taking place included:
·
Its
Elementary Watson
·
Science is
Cool
·
Nature of
Sound and Sonic Landscape
·
Why should
we study David Beckham?
·
Advanced
Science for Primary Schools
·
Wild Plant
Detectives
·
Minibeast
Magic
Places
such as Leighton Hospital, The Alexandra Soccer Centre, and British Gas
Services, Stockport, were visited. The
general public and the children had the opportunity of meeting rainforest
expert Dave Shaw who presented a very entertaining "Tribes, Teeth and
Tarantulas” at the Danebank Theatre at South Cheshire College.
The
seventh SET UP Science "Design
and Make" Schools Competition was held on 6th July 2005 at the Manchester
Metropolitan University Cheshire. The competition offers pupils the chance to
gain recognition for their projects, using feedback from expert judges.
Next
year,
2006,
will be our tenth year and as always we strive to make the week ever
better. To achieve this, the committee
is looking for new presentations and, of course, new sources of funding. Events are totally free to the children and
participating schools, with all costs (which in 2005 came to in the region of
£8,000) being met by SET UP
Science.
SET UP Science offers a
great opportunity for all involved in Science, Engineering or Technology to
promote their subject within the community.
Help us to make 2006 the best year yet.
