"Design and Make" Competition 2005

Twenty Two secondary students from six schools took part in the Design and Make competition organised by SET UP Science at MMU Cheshire, Crewe,on Wednesday 6th July.

There were three categories to be judged: Excellence in Design and Communication, Excellence in Research and Development, Excellence in Manufacture, as well as an overall winner.

Overall Winner: Sam Bullock of Alsager for his Avalanche Cafe. The judges commented that Sam achieved excellence in all three categories for his project.

Winner of the Manufacturing category was Emma Pickthall of Brine Leas for her shoes. Judges' comments:n The skill, care and attention given to the manufacture of the footwear would enable top models to use them on the catwalk.

Winner of the Research and Development category was Elizabeth Willer, Shavington, for her raspberry roulade. Judges' comments: The process of researching ingredients, tastes and appearance had been carried out extremely thoroughly with an evaluation and modification process second to none. They were only disappointed that there was none to taste!

Winner of the Design and Communication category was Fiona Ashbrooke, Shavington, for her fast food packaging. Judges' comments: Creative, appealing and appropriate design coupled to a clear presentation singled out this entry.

Highly commended was Nathan Lundie for a mobile carwash. After building up a personalised car wash round where he lives Nathan decided to develop a piece of equipment to assist. This he combined with his school programme.

Organiser Tom Protheroe said that if we had a category for entrepeneurial achievement then Nathan would have been the winner. All the young people who had entered the competition were winners. They had shown that design, research and manufacturing were in good hands for the future.

The judges were Mr Harry Cornes of MMU Cheshire, Mr D Heyes, Civil Engineer, and Mrs S Wells, science writer.

Sponsors of prizes were Bentley Motors and SET UP Science. MMU Cheshire provided the premises and guides.

All the students received a certificate in recognition of the high standards of work achieved in the many and varied entries.
