Background Information 2004

Everybody needs science!  The annual National Science Week, coordinated by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, raises the profile of Science, Engineering and Technology and promotes the public’s engagement with these issues.

SET UP Science is a local charity set up in South Cheshire to offer young people the opportunity to interact with Science, Engineering and Technology, and to stimulate and encourage their continuing participation in the future.  SEUP Science does this mainly during National Science week, which in 2004 will run from March 12th to March 21st.

In March 2003, SET UP Science laid on 109 presentations to local children, either in their schools or at specially selected venues.  Presentations taking place included:

Spark the Imagination

Down with Drudgery

Sun, Moon and Earth Show

The Wonderful World of Plants

Is it Safe to Drink the Water?

Visits included places such as Delamere Forest, Jodrell Bank, Newchapel Observatory, an RSPCA Wildlife Hospital, and the Salt Museum.  Over 3,200 children participated, and the general public had the opportunity of attending the "Magical Maths for Muggles" presentation by the magician and mathematician Michael Wardle.  This was held in the Danebank Theatre at the South Cheshire College.

In addition, the fifth SET UP Science "Design and Make" Schools Competition was held on 9th July 2003 at the Bentley Motors Academy. The competition offers pupils the chance to gain recognition for their projects, with feedback from expert judges. The number of entrants was down this year but the standard of work was very high.  The 2004 Competition is probably again to be held in July.

2004 will be our eighth year and as always we strive to make the week ever better.  To achieve this, the committee is looking for new presentations and, of course, new sources of funding.  Events are totally free to the children and participating schools, with all costs (which in 2003 came to in the region of £9,500) being met by SET UP Science.

SET UP Science offers a great opportunity for all involved in Science, Engineering or Technology to promote their subject within the community.  Help us to make 2004 the best year yet.
