South Cheshire
"Design and Make" Competition 2002
For the third year running SETUP Science organised a "Design and Make" competition for GCSE and A Level students based in South Cheshire. This was on Wednesday 10th July 2002, and again was held at the Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motor Cars Academy. Seven secondary schools took part.
In the A Level competition Charles Timony was Highly Commended for a specialised seagoing storage unit.
Miles Hamill from St Thomas More (Crewe) won the GCSE "Excellence in Making" prize for a superbly crafted tool box.
The GCSE "Excellence in Research and Development" winner was Jessica McCombie from Sandbach Girl's High with a child's party dress.
The GCSE "Excellence in Design and Communication" winner was Daniel Boulton from Alsager High for his bar/café design and model.
In the overall winners section reflecting skills in all sections of design, communication, development and manufacture the GCSE runner up was Anna Marchant of Alsager High School with her café bar design.
The GCSE overall winner was Jason Davidson of Malbank High who developed a "pirate alarm system" for large ships. Jason had read that hundreds of ships have been attacked by pirates in the last few years, mainly in South America and south east Asia. In answer to the challenge he had designed and made a "pirate alarm system" which the judges from M.M.U. and Bentley felt met all the criteria to a high standard.
SETUP Science Spokesman Tom Protheroe said" Once again the young people of south Cheshire have shown that the traditional engineering skills of the area are being carried on and often enhanced. Thanks are due to the students and teachers".
